India’s space journey, traditionally spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is undergoing a monumental transformation. With recent policy reforms and a burgeoning startup ecosystem, the private sector is now poised to play a significant role in what was once a tightly controlled domain. The Indian space economy, valued at $9 billion in 2023, is projected to reach an ambitious $44 billion by 2033, capturing 8% of the global market. This growth is driven by a strategic vision to leverage private innovation for everything from satellite manufacturing and launch services to advanced data applications. But as private companies enter this high-stakes arena, what are the challenges they face in a sector historically dominated by a single, powerful entity?
The emergence of over 100 spacetech startups in India, many founded in the last five years, signals a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Pixxel are at the forefront, developing indigenous launch vehicles and advanced earth observation satellites. Skyroot Aerospace made history by launching India’s first privately developed rocket, Vikram-S, while Pixxel is building a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites.
